SENER has reached an agreement with the European Space Agency (ESA) for the prime contractor role on phases C/D and E1 (until in orbit verification) of the Proba-3 space mission.

This contract represents a milestone in Spain’s aerospace history.

To date, it is the only ESA mission in which a Spanish company, SENER, has been appointed the main contractor for an entire program, leading a consortium of European companies from more than 10 countries.

SENER Vicepresident, Andrés Sendagorta, signed the agreement with ESA Director of Science and Robotic Exploration (D/SRE), Álvaro Giménez, during the 50 Years of European Space Cooperation commemorative event organized by ESA at its European Space Astronomy Centre (ESAC) in Villafranca del Castillo, Madrid (Spain).

The project under SENER’s responsibility consists of developing a precision mechanism with three axes, one for deploying the antenna and the other two for pointing.

Two radio signals are transmitted through the mechanism from the satellite to the antennas.

The signals are K band for the high-gain antenna and X band for the low-gain antenna.

At this event attended the President of Spain, Mariano Rajoy, the Spanish Minister of Industry, Energy and Tourism, José Manuel Soria, and ESA Director General, Jean-Jacques Dordain.

SENER participates in the Proba-3 mission since 2007, when the bridging phase started to consolidate the initial project studies (phase A).
